BEST PRODUCT: Rouge Bunny Rouge Aqua Primer

Jenni reviews one of her all-time favorite products – Rouge Bunny Rouge Prelude In The Clouds Aqua Primer

Normally we (the BFF Beauty Girls) only deem something a ‘Best Product’ if we’ve used it for a very long time, love it and can’t live without it. However, I’m making an exception to this rule, because I’m completely obsessed, and totally in love with Rouge Bunny Rouge’s Prelude In The Clouds Aqua Primer, despite having only used it for the first time less than a month ago.

My initial reaction to the Aqua Primer is…WOW!!!!
This is an amazing product!!! A truly unique, one of a kind, fantastic and beautiful product.  Did I use enough adjectives to express how much I love this product? Well I hope so, because I do! In fact, I love it so much that I’m prepared to say Rouge Bunny Rouge’s Aqua Primer is my current front runner for favorite product I’ve used this entire year – A 2012 Best Product Choice!!

Here is what Rouge Bunny Rouge says about their Aqua Primer:

Prelude In The Clouds Aqua Primer

One of the Rouge Bunny Rouge marvels; you’ll soon know just why… Floating isles of melted spray cloud from the Enchanted Garden have inspired us to create this unctuously soft make-up prelude.

Use it like the rambunctiously wily Rain-Pixies, who harness it to help keep their skin looking dewy. Your face will be cushioned with an invisible layer of comfort and hydration, pores minimised and make-up lasts all day long. Wear it on its own for fresh and juicily soft skin; a downright dangerously innocent look. Worn in partnership with our foundation, the combination will bestow you with superbly smooth skin for an unequalled sophistication. You’ll wonder how you ever did without it.

This water-based texture is so light and refreshing on your skin that you will feel like floating through the clouds, but it contains plethora of active ingredients. Sea-Buckthorn Berry Extract serves as a superb-antioxidant and anti-ageing ingredient that promotes cell tissue regeneration. Iris Florentina Root Extract smoothes out fine lines and wrinkles to create a perfect canvas for other products to be applied to the skin. Saccharide Isomerate provides intensive hydration, firming and smoothing; Bisabolol is used for its anti-irritant and anti-inflammatory capabilities. Vitamin E Acetate and Retinol Palmitate improve skin texture. Now you know why we are so excited to bring you this miracle in a bottle.

Small tricks:

  • Apply our Aqua Primer after your usual cleansing routine – it can be used alone as a moisturiser, too. Holds foundation and other tinted complexion products onto the skin and helps prevent colour change.
  • For a truly natural look, mix our PRELUDE IN THE CLOUDS with our MILK AQUARELLE and apply. The effect is that of a light, dewy tinted moisturiser.
  • Apply to the eyelids and lips as a base to give even longer lasting wear. Mix with the Eye Shadows for an all-day, crease resistant finish and even more colour depth.

For many years now I’ve tried to incorporate a primer into my makeup routine, but I couldn’t find one that I enjoyed enough to wear on a consistent basis. For the most part I was disappointed by the consistencies of the primers I’ve tried before. On the other hand, when I did find a primer that felt nice and looked great on my skin, I still couldn’t use it regularly because they did nothing to nourish and improve my skin, and so I couldn’t justify adding yet another step into my daily routine with no long-term benefits.  Long story short, I gave up and succumbed to the fact that my sensitive and sometimes prone to acne skin just simply couldn’t handle too many liquids at once.  So applying a primer (no matter how nice it may be) then additional makeup was out of the question for me…

But this all changed three weeks ago when I first tried the Rouge Bunny Rouge Prelude In The Clouds Aqua Primer. From the first moment I touched the Aqua Primer I knew I’d found something very special.  It’s light as air and feels like a refreshing glass of crystal clear, pure and clean water – hence the name “Aqua Primer.”

This product is unlike any other products of its’ kind.  It may sound like Prelude in the Clouds is just another makeup primer (due to the name) but I swear to you it feels, acts and produces results like a skincare serum. Just take at look at the incredible skincare active ingredients, this gem of a product includes…

Aqua Primer Ingredients:

Aqua / Water, Glycerin, Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethicone, Glyceryl Stearate, Hippophae Rhamnoides Fruit Extract, Iris Florentina Root Extract, Peg-100 Stearate, Phenoxyethanol, Saccharide Isomerate, Nylon-12, Butylene Glycol, Cetyl Alcohol, Propylene Glycol, Cetearyl Alcohol, Caprylyl Glycol, Carbomer, Bisabolol, Methylparaben, Disodium Edta, Peg-20 Stearate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Retinyl Palmitate, Glycoproteins, Sodium Hyaluronate, Butylparaben, Pentadecalactone, Sodium Hydroxide, Ethylparaben, Peg-8, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Isobutylparaben, Propylparaben, Tocopherol, Citric Acid, Ascorbyl Palmitate, BHT, Ascorbic Acid

Yes that’s right, it contains retinol and a plethora skin improving acids.  If I had to re-name this product, I would call it –

I have worn it literally every single day for three weeks straight! I use it by itself for a light moisturizer, under makeup, as an eye shadow base, mixed with my Rouge Bunny Rouge Bronzing Glow Liquid or with my Rouge Bunny Rouge Tinted Moisturizer, mixed with any one of my foundations etc. etc…the list goes on and on. I love the dewey finish and super-soft look that it gives my skin every single time I wear it, regardless of how I use it or what it’s mixed with.
A few pictures of me with some makeup on over the Aqua Primer…

The texture of the primer is that of a light, airy, slightly milky lotion that completely disappears once applied onto the skin.  The scent is hard to pinpoint exactly because it’s so faint, but I would describe the aroma as fresh, clean and delightful!  Like I said before, it feels more like a serum than your typical primer, however it works brilliantly as a makeup primer as well.  In fact, this Aqua primer is the BEST makeup primer I have ever used!  It gets absorbed quickly into the skin, creating a silky smooth canvas for makeup and provides for a fresh and glowy finish that lasts all day long.  Additionally, when used as an eyeshadow primer, it helps enhance the pigmentation and staying power considerably.

Best of all, it does NOT clog my pores or cause any irritations/breakouts what-so-ever! It’s truly an outstanding product that I will recommend to all of my friends and any other beauty obsessed person I meet.
To sum it all up, the best aspects of the aqua primer are the same things that make this product feel and act like a skincare product as well as a makeup primer, and these are:

  1. It keeps my skin feeling fresh and fabulous all day long
  2. It calms any redness or irritations on my skin
  3. It moisturizes my skin, yet reduces any greasiness
  4. It keeps my skin feeling nourished and healthy even after I remove my makeup at the end of the day

I love love LOVE Rouge Bunny Rouge Prelude In The Clouds Aqua Primer! A+++ Best Product Choice!!!

My BFF, Kristin, also tested this product, as well as the Rouge Bunny Rouge Metamorphoses Mattifying Primer.  So you can get an idea of how these two products work on two distinctly different skin types, we decided to both test each of the primers, and review each primer separately but include our respective experiences for you to compare.  Here are Kristin’s thoughts on the Aqua Primer…

Kristin Says:
I loved trying the Aqua Primer! It is ultralight and so moisturizing, but at the same time does not let your makeup move an inch! It goes on so light and fills in any lines and so your makeup will not sink in and make creases. I love the dewey finish this primer gives, and the best part is you don’t feel greasy at all! It’s all moisture and no excessive shine even after hours of wearing makeup! It also had a cooling effect and seemed to even reduce puffiness from eating MSG filled Chinese food the night before!

Stay tuned for Kristin’s full review of the Metamorphoses Mattifying Primer (with Jenni’s thoughts as well) comparing & contrasting the two Rouge Bunny Rouge Primers…Coming up next…

  1. You have now completely convinced me that I need to try this primer! Thanks for the fabulous review. One question — do you apply sunscreen over it? I am very pale and need a serious sunscreen (I usually use elta or Sunday Riley.) Does this work well under a sunscreen?

  2. Amy-
Thank you for commenting, and I'm so glad my review was able to help. I promise you will love this primer, It's seriously my favorite product right now – I'm obsessed! I feel like it has completely changed the way I wear makeup, I get excited to play with different colors and try new looks because my aqua primer makes everything look better! Anyways…so I use both Elta and Sunday Riley's Cashmere as well (I like your style,) and I just finished testing both with the Aqua Primer in response to your question. Here is what I found:
    – Both sunscreens go on smoothly on top of the Aqua Primer
    – When applying sunscreen first, I found Elta is easier to layer under the primer.
    – Both sunscreens can also be mixed with the Aqua primer, in fact I found Cashmere actually finishes on my skin even better when mixed with the primer!
Hope this helps you, and let me know if you have any other questions I'd be happy to do more testing!
    Thanks again!

  3. Thank you for this reply! So I having been using this primer for the last week, and it is entirely fantastic. I am so glad that I read this review and bought it. My skin looks glowing and smooth, and as you said, everything looks better over it or mixed with it. I love it with the Elta, and I am excited to try it with the Cashmere because I imagine that it will reduce the slight stickiness that is the only drawback of that otherwise great product.

Ok, enough gushing and Aqua primer geekery. Just wanted to stop back by to say thanks again, especially for testing the sunscreens. That was so sweet of you!
